YOUTH WINTER SPORTS LEAGUE
Your child can learn and compete in multiple winter sports throughout the season.
Developing Snow Sports Athletes
The goal of the Youth Winter Sports League is to introduce young athletes to some of the most popular snow sports in Michigan and develop the fundamental skills of these sports. In doing so we aim to foster teamwork and inclusivity, promote safety and responsible sportsmanship and encourage a love for being outdoors and active in the winter time.
Learning How To Compete in Winter Sports
Once a week, every Tuesday night from 6-8pm, youth athletes will learn the fundamentals and compete in a different winter sport. The league is designed to build on skills learned in previous sessions. Each practice will include instructional time from a coach followed by practicing specific skills. The season will culminate in a competitive triathlon event featuring all of the skills developed over the course of the season.
Luge
The Muskegon Luge track is one of four in the country. Our luge track is designed for first time athletes to learn the sport. The track is 650 ft long with four banked curves. Sliders reach maximum speeds up to 30 mph. Before sliding our coaches will teach your athlete the equipment, how to position their body on the sled and how to steer and control the sled while sldiing down the ice track
Skating and Hockey
Muskegon Luge has over 2 acres of outdoor ice for skating, plus a quater-mile skating trail through the woods. Athletes will first learn the fundamentals of ice skating wearing their choice of hockey, recreation or speed skates. Once athletes have demonstrated their ability to skate they will use a hockey stick to learn puck handling and play a fun game of pick-up pond hockey.
Cross Country Skiing
The trails at Muskegon Luge are lighted and groomed for two types of cross country skiing, classic and skating. Your athlete will first learn how to classic ski using groomed. parallel tracks set in the snow. Once they can demonstrate the ability to classic ski that will advance to the more difficult and faster technique of skate skiing.
Biathlon
Biathlon is an Olympic event that combines the sports of cross country skiing and rifle shooting. Athletes will use their cross country ski skills to ski to our controlled shooting range where they will learn the fundamental safety procedures and techniques for firing an air rifle After instruction they will compete in target shooting.
